Buying a Pram Newborn

Prams and pushchairs are the multifunctional, versatile partners of caregivers and parents. They are the co-pilots for your child's new journey.

A pram newborn is a must for newborns and babies. It has the most solid, sturdy carrycot with soft and secure walls.

A pram comes with a bassinet. However, it can be converted to a stroller when the baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns must be protected to the greatest extent possible. A stroller or pram equipped with safety features will keep your baby secure and comfortable while traveling. A stroller or pram should include a break that is working and a five-point harness (2 shoulder straps with two waist straps and an e-crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person driving it. Verify that the stroller you choose meets these standards.

Find a stroller that allows your baby to ride in the recommended lying-flat position. This position helps your baby and prevents the risk of a dangerous spinal curve which could lead to problems with their spine. By keeping the airways open, it decreases the risk for SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). Most prams are able to be used from the moment of birth. They come with an adjustable seat that reclines into a lay-flat position for infants, and can be converted into a pushchair for older children.

The suspension of a pram will determine how smooth it rides. A pram with a lot of spring suspension will cost more however, it's worth the extra expense if you plan to use your pram each for a while or more.

Always read the instructions and carefully read the warning labels on your stroller or pram. When not in use, park your pram away from any potential hazards such as bicycles, traffic or other people. It is recommended to remove any bags or items off the handles, as they could cause your baby to be trapped or even suffocate.

A stroller or pram should not be left unattended with a baby inside even if they're asleep. They could wriggle into the pram and become stuck, or be pushed away and cause injuries. It's also not a good idea to hang bags or other objects from the handles because they may fall and hit your baby pram in the head.

Comfort

Possibility of lying flat seating is an absolute must for newborns, as it promotes better back and lung development. Cocoons or carrycots are found on many prams. They create a cozy environment that is a comfortable place for your baby and can be removed easily from the frame. Certain seats, like the bucket-style seat on the egg2, don't recline completely flat, but they provide an enjoyable ride for your child.

Some prams also have a separate bassinet, newborn my babiie stroller or inset seat so that you can easily change between sitting and sleeping modes depending on your bub's needs. This is often called a 'travel system and is the first option you should test with your baby.

Find a pram that has two shoulder straps (ideally padded) and a sturdy five-point safety harness that fits your bub's body safely. Be sure to check for gaps, or loose places where fingers could become trapped. Also, make sure that the buckles are easy for older children to use. It's also worth considering whether you'd like a pram with a parent-facing feature or not. It's ideal for keeping an eye on your child and helping them feel reassured by the familiarity of their parents.

Our parent testers loved the feature of certain prams, like the Graco Near2Me, which lets you raise your baby and lower it by pressing one button. This is a great method of keeping in touch with your baby, especially when they are asleep. If you're looking to purchase a travel system, make sure the frame's compatibility with the car capsule you've chosen to avoid you having to wake them up while changing between pram, car and back.

Convenience

It is crucial to consider your baby's needs for transportation when you purchase a new baby's pram. Some prams have a carrycot or bassinet, which allow your baby to lie flat (essential for their spinal development and breathing) while others come with a seat that can recline into a flat position. It is important to look at what other accessories the pram comes with like a changing bag and footmuff which are essential for keeping your baby warm in colder months.

It's also worth noting that some prams and strollers can be converted into travel systems, permitting you to connect a car capsule to the frame via adaptors so that you can easily transfer your child between the car and the pushchair without needing to wake them up. These can be useful when you live a busy life or don't have a sufficient space for a pram capsule, although it's worth keeping in mind that your child will need to be old enough and able to sit on their own before you can switch between the car capsule and pram.

Another feature to look out for is the possibility of raising and lowering your infant's seat from a low setting to a high setting, which helps maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you, which our tester for parents found extremely useful for her 10-month-old boy! An excellent example is the Graco Near2Me that can be adjusted to lower the seat, allowing your baby to glide towards you by pressing a button and stay in constant eye contact.

You should also be able to store shopping bags and changing bags in the basket underneath. You should also be able to keep changing and shopping bags inside the basket beneath (although keep in mind that loading the pram with excessive weight can cause it to tip over). If you're not sure what model to go with, try out a variety of models at your local store.
