A vertical cycle is a cycle of cards which ranges among the different raritites. It is usually made of three cards in a single set that share the same color or colors. Generally vertical cycles and composed of a rare, an uncommon and a common. With the advent of mythic rare, vertical cycles remained three card cycles but with which one of the rarities missing — normally uncommon or rare. Vertical cycles are much less common than horizontal cycles because they take away design space from sets.[1] Unlike horizontal cycles, which are made of one card per color (or combination of colors), more than one card per rarity is allowed in a vertical cycle (see the "Ramosian cycle" in Mercadian Masques as an example).

These cycles are usually creatures that usually share an ability that can become more powerful with rarity. Power and toughness also usually increase with rarity, as does the mana value. Early vertical cycles, such as those found in Alpha, usually are creatures that are simply better with rarity, often with the same mana cost and/or power/toughness.

Examples of Vertical Cycles

The "Bloodfire" cycle.
  • <c>Bloodfire Dwarf</c>, <c>Bloodfire Kavu</c> and <c>Bloodfire Colossus</c> are each red creatures; are a common, an uncommon and a rare; have similar abilities that increase in power with rarity; and have increasing power/toughness and converted mana cost with rarity.
  • <c>Gray Ogre</c>, <c>Uthden Troll</c> and <c>Sedge Troll</c> are each red creatures; are a common, an uncommon and a rare; and have abilities that become more powerful with rarity. This is an early vertical cycle.
  • Black Dreams: In Torment black got a vertical cycle of Instants and sorceries which require cards to be discarded in addition to the spell being played — <c>Restless Dreams</c>, <c>Sickening Dreams</c>, and <c>Insidious Dreams</c>.
  • In The Brothers' War, Urza and Mishra each had a vertical cycle of an uncommon, rare and mythic rare showing them at various points throughout the Brothers' War.
  • Wilds of Eldraine had a vertical cycle of Legendary artifacts representing the boons given to the three witches by the fae Lord Talion — <c>Eriette's Tempting Apple</c>, <c>Hylda's Crown of Winter</c>, and <c>Agatha's Soul Cauldron</c>.
