Template:Infobox type

Crocodile is a creature type used for large aquatic reptile predators found in sluggish waters and swamps of the tropics. They appear in black, blue or green. The first creature to bear the type was <c>Sandbar Crocodile</c> in Mirage.

Naming issues[edit]

The correct term for this subtype would have been "crocodilians", including the alligator, caiman, crocodile, and gharial families. Alligators have wider and shorter heads than crocodiles. <c>Rootwater Alligator</c> was printed with the subtype Alligator, but for gaming reasons (tribal) this was changed to Crocodile in the Grand Creature Type Update. Gharials (like <c>Grayscaled Gharial</c> and <c>Algae Gharial</c>) are a species of crocodilians with long, slender snouts.

Storyline[edit]

Crocodiles are found on:

  • Alara: On the shard of Jund, the viashino possess a crocodilian form.[1][2] After the Conflux the Viashiono of Jund were confronted by their primitive, beastly, counterparts on Naya.[3] Gharials are also present in Jund, where they hide within the algae-choked tar pits.[4]
  • Amonkhet: Crocodiles are found as both wild animals as well as strange, soul-devouring demons known as Ammits.[5] They are sacred to the gods Bontu and Rhonas; the former bears a crocodile head. Dragons and drakes in this plane also bear crocodilian visages.
  • Arcavios: Spined Crocodiles known as Karoks are often reanimated as Zombies by Witherbloom College. (<c>Karok Wrangler</c>).
  • Capenna: Wild crocodiles live in the sewers of New Capenna, while others are kept as pets by the Riveteers.
  • Dominaria
  • Kaladesh
  • Kamigawa: Kakkazan was a spirit in the shape of an upright crocodile with ruby-colored scales.
  • Mirrodin
  • Ravnica: Crocodiles inhabit the Undercity, where their presence posed an obstacle to the Izzet League's expansion.[6] They are also one of the species commonly used by the Simic Combine in the creation of Krasises.
  • Zendikar
  • Tarkir: Crocodiles are naturally found in the Gurmag Swamp. The Sultai Brood keeps both living and undead crocodiles as guard dogs for their jungle palaces. This is depicted in <c>Dead Drop</c>, <c>Death Frenzy</c>, <c>Kheru Dreadmaw</c>, and <c>Grim Contest</c>

Notable crocodiles[edit]

Trivia[edit]

  • <c>Lukamina, Crocodile Form</c>, <c>Marsh Crocodile</c>, and <c>Scuttlegator</c> — The only multicolored crocodiles.
  • <c>Dross Crocodile</c> and <c>Kheru Dreadmaw</c> — Zombie crocodiles.
    • <c>Ammit Eternal</c> is the Zombified version of the crocodile Demon <c>Baleful Ammit</c>.
  • <c>Skeletal Crocodile</c> — The only Skeleton crocodile.
  • <c>Crocanura</c> — A mutant Crocodile Frog
  • <c>Scuttlegator</c> — A mutant Crocodile Crab Turtle
  • <c>Vivien's Crocodile</c> — A Spirit Crocodile
  • <C>Emperor Crocodile</c> — This crocodile has a strong power/toughness ratio (5/5) compared to it's mana cost, File:3.svgFile:G.svg. The only downside of this creature is that it must be sacrificed if it's the only creature you control.
