Manticore
- Not to be confused with Masticore.
Manticore is a creature type describing sentient, ill-tempered monsters with lion-like bodies, wings jutting from the shoulders, a scorpion's tail, a human face, and a mouth filled with multiple rows of razor-sharp teeth.[1]
<c>Crimson Manticore</c> and <c set="MMQ" number="" title="Flailing Manticore" artist="">Flailing Manticore</c> (Mercadian Masques) marked Manticores as red creatures, but little else mechanically links the eleven manticores of Magic. Most were winged, but Amonkhet had just as many that were ground-bound, and several had damage-dealing abilities or some of interpretation of the sort.
Storyline[edit]
Amonkhet[edit]
The Manticores of Amonkhet are wingless, with the bodies and heads of great cats, spiked legs and a scorpion tail. They are used in the trials of the five gods to test the inhabitants of Naktamun.[2] <c title="Some">Manticore Eternal</c> were zombified and joined Bolas' army of Eternals.
Dominaria[edit]
Dominarian manticores have the wings of a bat. They are known to see every other creature than their own as food. A <c>crimson manticore</c> in the service of Geyadrone Dihada once attacked Dakkon Blackblade on Corondor, and was killed.
Mercadia[edit]
In contrast to most Manticores, those on Mercadia have feathered wings.
Theros[edit]
Theran Manticores live in the far reaches of Theros, beyond leonin lands. A manticore has the body of a lion, a human-like head with many rows of teeth, and a deadly tail. Akroans say each manticore is the reincarnated spirit of a once-great warrior, part of an army slaughtered defending its homeland from archons. The warriors were so full of life and valor that the gods intervened and transformed them into manticores.[3] It is said that Purphoros forged the manticore's tail from bronze, its teeth from silver, and its heart from hate.[4]
Zendikar[edit]
Manticores like the <c>conquering manticore</c> are known to exist on the plane. These creatures are feared and always obeyed.
